First Attempt Using Oil Pastels

This one has been sitting around for awhile whilst I play with my new oil pastels. I have a great deal of respect for those of you that use oils and create such beautiful and stunning pieces of art. I find my acrylics are crisper in appearance but I do kind of like the muted tones one can get with pastels. That being said I had to find an entirely new level of patience working with them. Please do let me know how I did or if you have any tips I would appreciate them. Cheers, Susan
Susan Feniak's Art 
When I paint with oil pastels, I use a gessoed flat board with little texture . This will give me sharper edges, the paint moves around easier and doesn’t take up so much of the oil stick. Canvas was always difficult for me to paint a satisfying result.

I use them occasionally either in an acrylic or oil painting if I want some linear marks and sometimes I lay them on their sides as that gives a nice texture on canvas. They also dissolve s bit with linseed or solvent so they’re quite versatile! I’ve never done a whole painting with them – I love yours! Wonderful texture.

Beautiful and well done Susan. I have used oil pastels and agree about needing patience when using them. You’ve achieved nice variations in tone and depth. I really like this! 👍🏻👌🏻💕

I’ve not used oil pastels since grade school so I don’t have tips, but I love how you made the water look like it’s sparkling!

Go girl, I think this looks fantastic, having never used oil pastels I would not know where to start…..you have inspired me to give them a try, I need to do some you tube research as I don’t get how they fix! Do they just dry like oil paint? So many questions, here I go, thanks for sharing your first attempt, if you had not have said, I would have thought you had used them often 😀

Wow!!! Thank you Rebecca!! Yes do let them dry like oils. To add more texture and layers let them dry overnight. Everyone on WB can advise as well. I googled them too. I can recommend a knife, razor, tortillions (stick) and refined linseed oil to help spread, layer and add texture. Have fun and bring patience. 🙂

No textured paper for oil pastels. They need something to grab onto. Mine was Bienfang canvasette paper canvas. 🙂

Very nicely done with the oil pastels! I haven’t attempted anything outside of watercolor so this is impressive to me. Beautiful scene you’ve created! 😍

Well well well, you know I am going to love this one Susan!!! Yay that you are using oil pastels! I use mungyos and I really like them. All oil pastels require a little patience in the beginning as you said, but I think you are going to really enjoy them. A tip that I wished I had had starting out that I will share with you is that if you let them sit overnight or even for a couple of nights it is easier to add more layers. Also, there are tools you can use to get more detail or a crisper if look if that is what you are desiring. I like tortillions and clay shapers. I really like this painting… it reminds me a lot of scenes up here. Well done!! ~Rita 🙂

Thank you Rita, I do have tortillions and a knife. Its going to be a learning experience for me. The patience part came in while letting the oils dry overnight! I am so not used to that. Thank you for the great tips and for stopping by. I will continue to play and learn. 🙂
