Winter Chickadees

original art by Susan Feniak  water colour pencil on paper  Tomorrow is Draw a Bird Day but I have gone bird crazy here so am able to post this one today and another is ready for the official day.  These two look as impressed with the fact that it is winter as I am.  Grumpy?  No matter, it is winter and there is nothing they or I can do about it.  Cheer up!!  At least they don’t have a dump of snow on them like my cardinals do!

Quick Lets Go South

I decided to take a day off from all the pre Christmas fun and games of shopping, decorating, baking, wrapping, cleaning, entertaining and all the other things associated with that upcoming event.  Time to do some art.  Now that is a switch!! Time for art??  Since it is a rather soggy sunless day in these parts I came up with a plan to paint a pair of cardinals.  You know, just to get me into a better Christmas frame of mind.  One thing led to another and the next thing I knew the cardinals were looking a little too snow bound and frazzled.  Ergo, “Quick Lets Go South”!!  I like to think the one cardinal is pointing in that direction.  It looks to me like he is. Enjoy!  Cheers, Susan

A Nice Day For A Walk

Previously titled, “Done?”  The consensus is that the painting is indeed done.  I did add some Canada Geese flying in formation but I have not taken another photo of the painting.  It was a nice day for a walk along the nature trail in Salmon Arm Bay. The biggest water colour I have tackled to date.  At the moment I am not sure if this one is finished or not.  I don’t want to over work it.  Usually I am happy or pleased with the end product.  Perhaps its because this is a water colour that has me doubting.  It has been fun playing and spending time at my easel.

In Progress

This is the biggest water colour I have tackled to date.  Another experiment.  An I can do it moment.  It is a work in progress but thought I could share it.

Even More Fun!

Well what do you know, I had more fun and made more time to do another quick sketch today!  Lucky me or is that lucky you?  The Pond Iris are in full bloom in my pond at the moment.  How appropriate!   “Pond Iris”  original art by Susan Feniak  Staedtler Watercolour Pencils on Opus Essentials Sketchbook 8.5”x 11” paper.  Enjoy!

Having More Fun!

Two more quick sketches using my new Staedtler Watercolour Pencils.  The first is a busy Front Street scene from Caye Caulker Belize.  All the roads on Caye Caulker are of beautiful compact white sand. If a person stops and looks at where they are walking they will see sea shells and bits of coral mixed in with the sand.  I may have gotten carried away with the shade from the palm trees making that white sand disappear.  It is a quick sketch with mixed results, right? The other sketch is strictly from my imagination.  A bit idyllic I would say.  “A Busy Front Street” is Staedtler Watercolour Pencils on Canson Mixed Media 7”x10” paper.  “Small Island” is Staedtler Watercolour Pencils on Opus Essentials Sketchbook 8 1/2” x 11” paper.  Both original art by Susan Feniak

p.s. The only pavement we saw while on Caye Caulker was the airport runway.  No need for roads when the biggest mode of transportation are two wheeled bikes, golf carts or your very own two feet.  Bliss.

Prizes to paintings

Today my Sister came for a visit.  She gave me an awesome prize!  A set of Staedtler Watercolour Pencils!!  Although I was sorry to see her leave I couldn’t wait to start playing with the new pencils.  So here you are Kathy, the first of many paintings rendered with my new watercolour pencils.  Thank you very much.

The reference photo is one I took of my own magnolia tree this spring.  Staedtler Watercolour Pencils on Canson Mix Media 7”x10” paper.  Perhaps now I can venture onto bigger paper.

And, thank you Kathy for the much needed laughter!!

Given to a good home!

004_thumb.jpg “Doink” the Killdeer chick was matted, framed and given away as a birthday present. Since the recipient was one of the couple who encouraged me to paint Killdeer chicks in the first place I thought she should have at least one of them. I do know Doink has gone to an appreciative home. Cheers, Susan

Happiest of Holidays To You
