#NatureDoodlewash A surprise!

June 21  Imagine if you will going around a corner on you favourite nature trail and coming across one of these guys.  A black bear.  Staring back at you, midstride, mid trail.  All stop.  You find yourself muttering a few choice unrepeatable words.  What to do?  Make noise, look big!  Ya, make noise look big!!  The black bear is just as startled.  He high tails it into the woods and you do an about face and walk as briskly as humanly possible in the opposite direction from whence you came.  A true story.  Talk about an adrenalin rush.  Where is a camera when you need it?  I don’t think I would have even had a chance to take a picture it all happened rather quickly.

#NatureDoodlewash Another sea

June 20  Today my walk took me to another kind of sea.  A field full of wild flowers.  Its a rather hilly patch of land.  Mainly covered by white daisies, clover and assorted other grasses and weeds but it all reminded me of a rolling ocean.

#NatureDoodlewash Lady Bug

June 19  On my nature walk today I came across a Lady Bug or Lady Bird.  No aphids are safe in you garden with these bugs around.  Someone once told me that Lady Bugs are good luck.  Seems to me a lot of things are supposed to bring you good luck.  I suppose it is okay to believe, why not?  One thing is for certain whenever I come across a Lady Bug I treat her with respect.  I will even go to great lengths to rescue one trapped indoors.

#NatureDoodlewash Sand Dollar

June 15  Today we will go for another walk along the sea shore.  No we are not going to the Caribbean today.  Instead we are going to a beach on the west coast of British Columbia.  There is lots to see here too.  Natures beauty abounds.  Perchance we will come across a sand dollar.  A sand dollar is a burrowing form of a flat sea urchin.  Did you know if you find one they are good luck?  Today we have come across one that has washed up along the shore and has turned white.  A live sand dollar will be darker, brownish black or purple.  So we can pick this one up and take it home.  A lovely memory from our walk today.

#NatureDoodlewash Tree Swallow

June 14  This could actually be another scene from the aft deck of our boat.  A pair of tree swallows have built a nest inside a hole in a piling on our dock.  We have enjoyed watching them coming and going busily feeding a nest full of young.  On occasion the pair appear to be having words over how to raise and feed their young with a great deal of bickering back and forth.  But soon they go back to busily coming and going.  A cacophony arises from the nest with each trip.   The youngsters have all left the nest now.  But it would appear the couple are preparing for another batch.  The cycle will begin again and we will be entertained some more.

#NatureDoodlewash Conch Shell

June 13  Today I share a memory of a walk along the beach, of sun drenched white sand and palm trees rustling in the warm breeze.  Today I bring you a conch shell from that walk.   If I hold the shell up to my ear I can still hear the Caribbean.  In my world this memory is of the ultimate nature walk.

#NatureDoodlewash Butterfly

June 9th   Today I have decided to stay closer to home and go for a walk in the garden.  I inspect all my flowers and shrubs and make sure they are thriving in this heat wave.  To my great joy and wonder a butterfly stops by for a visit.   Flitting from flower to bud.  Hardly stopping long enough for me to see  its shape and colors.  How can I remember how to draw that?  If only my butterfly bush had survived the winter, then maybe my visitor would have stayed longer.

#Draw A Bird Day and #NatureDoodlewash

Blue Heron  June 8th  Its time for #Draw A Bird Day again so I am combining it with #NatureDoodlewash for the day.  The Blue Heron speaks for himself.  An elegant and normally shy elusive bird this one liked to visit us while at our marina in Sicamous a couple of summers ago.  I have been meaning to do his portrait ever since.

This #Draw A Bird Day and #NatureDoodlewash  is on Strathmore watercolor paper and painted with Holbein Artists’ Water Color.  Original art by Susan Feniak

#NatureDoodlewash Salamander

June 7th  Today I am out for a rather quick walk in the woods.  Its been hot here.  As always I like to look all around to see what there is to see.  Looking down I see this little fellow, a salamander.  He seems to be smiling at me from his cool hiding place under a log.  I think he is as surprised to see me as I am to see him.  Soon he disappears under his log.  And I carry on to see what else there is to see…….
